Today’s online market unfortunately offers a huge number of terrible indoor and outdoor security cameras, which only confuses business owners and homeowners alike.
We want to help Australians avoid going to the trouble and expense of installing something with a highly inflated price tag – yet still in realms of “cheap” – only to discover they’ve spent a day crawling through the roof and several hundreds of dollars on a complete CCTV flop.
It happens every single day, in every city in Australia, multiple times. People buy a CCTV “kit-in-a-box” from Amazon or eBay or the hardware store and go to the trouble of crawling around in the roof running the flimsy Chinese factory made cables.
Why do they opt for running hard wired cable CCTV cameras?
Because they know Wi-Fi cameras are terrible and they do not work well, if at all, unless you have a significant meshed wireless network around your entire property. Oh, and power points to plug them into of course lol😊 Don’t even think about battery operated cameras, please!!
Well, they got that part right!! Anyway, at the end of a long day they plug it all together with great expectations; hopes of a Hollywood like crystal clear, beautiful, colourful picture dazzling them with it’s almost insanely brilliant quality at such a low price.
Only to be confronted with a colourless, washed out, very unimpressive quality picture which, if you try zooming in on anything, turns into a big grey and blue mush, with perhaps something red over to right. It could be the swing set, or perhaps it’s grandma outside feeding the dog. Who knows right??
Here at DIY Security Supplies, we are in our 3rd decade of working in the CCTV and electronic security industry, and we have seen this thousands of times unfortunately. It still happens today – all day, every day.
Needless to say, if you purchase any of our security equipment you will NEVER have that disappointment and you WILL have that Hollywood like crystal clear, beautiful, colourful picture dazzling you. Our Hikvision CCTV equipment is unparalleled. And you get full manufacturer’s warranty and our own technical support at your fingertips.
But this article is talking about placement, so let us focus on the recommended placements of cameras AND the recommended camera for that location. Yes, different locations require different types of cameras. We bet you didn’t that😊!!!
OK, let’s go.
#1 The Front Yard / Front Door Camera
You might assume that intruders sneak around to side entrances, but statistics show that over 30% of burglars come straight to the front door. It’s also where package thieves strike which is becoming an ever increasing and annoying problem. A visible camera at on your front yard and/or main entrance keeps tabs on everybody that comes in and out of your home, from family members and babysitters to maintenance people, delivery people and more. It is one of the main prominent deterrent features! It should be a Hikvision 4K AcuSense camera which can differentiate between a human and a car verses say a cat or a dog or a pushbike etc. and then alert you 24/7/365 no matter where you are in the world
#2 The Driveway
A camera on the front of your garage and/or driveway is also a very prominent deterrent at the front of your property. It should be clearly visible from the street to give it maximum deterrent potential. One of our professional CCTV warning signs from DIY Security Supplies should be mounted just below this camera to give it as much impact as possible, and send a clear message to any would-be-intruder that they are targeting the wrong house and they really should give up before they even try. Quality CCTV cameras has this effect constantly. If you can let it keep a watchful eye on bikes, tools, grills, sports equipment, cars and everyone that handles them. If your garage is detached, the camera helps you stay connected.
If the garage is attached, the extra layer of security monitors another possible entryway into your home. If there’s a gate at the end of your driveway, you may want a camera there to spot anyone attempting to get in. If you have a Hikvision AcuSense camera at the front door or covering the front yard, this should be a Hikvision ColorVu camera which gives you a brilliant full colour video shot 24 hours a days even when it’s pitch black night time.
#3 Back & Side Doors
Doors that are out-of-sight allow visitors to enter undetected, whether they’re invited or not. To ensure full knowledge of everyone who enters and exits, add cameras to your secondary doors, especially if one of them is used as often or more often than your front door, or if one (like a basement door) seems particularly enticing or accessible to a potential intruder. These should be Hikvision 4K AcuSense cameras, again because they can tell the difference between a human and a cat, or insect, or dog etc. and alert you instantly if it is a human in the wrong place at the wrong time.
#4 The Backyard
Monitoring the back yard will help you keep tabs on anyone scoping out your house from the outside. It’s also handy for capturing the activities of kids, animals and trespassers. Once again we recommend these should be Hikvision Generation 2 4K AcuSense cameras
#5 Interior Common Areas
Placing cameras in gathering points like the kitchen or living room is a great way to see if the kids are doing what they’re supposed to do, if the babysitter is attentive, what the pets are getting into, or to check on household help like cleaners and repairmen. Consider prioritizing any rooms that have large ground-floor windows — that way you can see if anyone tampers with them or uses one as a break-in point. A lot of people don’t like internal cameras as they think they’re creepy but it depends on your household and your own induvial situations. It’s definitely becoming more normal in 2021 and moving forwards. We just recommend the Hikvision mini dome camera for this which is triggered by motion only and it looks like an upside down fried egg.
#6 Interior: Main Stairway or Hallway
Place a camera in the main thoroughfares inside your home, and it will be difficult for someone to move about undetected. If someone breaks in through a bathroom, bedroom or another unmonitored area, they’ll still be captured on camera if they move about the house. Again, we just recommend the Hikvision mini dome camera for this, also because it is triggered by motion only.
